Cerería One night we ate in a café called Cereria. We’d seen its description in the Rough Guide. It said it was frequented by “literary student types and pseudo-intellectual hipsters.” Nothing could have described Sue, Lizzie, Roger and Ian better. Roger was intellectual, Ian was a hipster, Lizzie was literary and Suedo. Imagine our shock when we noticed in the new updated edition of the Rough Guide to Spain that the entry for the café had been altered, adding one crucial word to the description. One wonders why they went to the trouble of adding just one extra adjective, let alone this one: "Cerería, Bxda de Sant Miquel 3-5. New hip café, filled with goateed literary student types and pseudo-intellectual hipsters. Just off of c/Avinyó. Open daily 9am-10pm." Life hangs by a thread. On such decisions memories are made. What if we’d had the latest edition of the Rough Guide? Would we have missed out on the wonder that was Cereria? After all, none of us could plausibly be described as “goateed”. Having said that, I have my doubts about Sue. What is a hipster, anyway? |
