Day 4 - Hiking across the hamada Slept on the edge of camp last night, too tired to walk off in search of a nice spot but determined not to sleep in a tent! Much more arid scenery today, with temperature in the mid thirties again. Started over flat hamada then into low rolling hills, looked like a different planet. Lots of small fossil bellomnites in the rocks, and even a few shells about. This was sea bed a few million years ago, a bit drier now though. Stopped under a lone acacia tree in a hollow with a few dunes at lunchtime. A young goat herd turned up and his goats ate the leftovers. (Looks like the camels with have to manage without lunch today.) Soon climbed out of the dunes onto more undulating hamada, walking over this all afternoon. Low rolling hills covered with black stones, many cracked and shattered by the extreme temperatures. The last few days are starting to take their toll, a few people are getting nosebleeds now, from the heat and exertion, and everyone is feeling pretty drained. Lots of sore feet and compeed in evidence but everyone is keeping going well, it is getting quite heavy going now. |

Apparently it is hotter than usual for the time of year and there is no wind most of the time, just clear blue sky and the relentless sun beating down. (dramatic innit?!?). Almost teatime now, and I need to sort out my stuff for tonight. We're in scorpion country and have been warned not to go barefoot. Tomorrow it's the big dunes, we can see Chegaga from camp, so a reasonably early night might be a good idea. |
