Ian Paul

Hi my name is Ian Paul and I am 2 1/2 years old.  On June 13th of 2000 the Dr. told us that I had Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 2.  Also known as SMA 2.  The Dr. told us that there is 4 types and the higher the number goes the less severe the disease is.  SMA is the genetic killing disease for kids 2 and under, that is SMA type 1.  The Dr. said that since I have type 2 and I am doing better than most of the kids with type 2 that I have till around my early teens.

What I mean better than most kids?  I can sit up and walk, most kids never get to do any of that.  I do fall alot and my Physical Therapist is getting me set up with a walker, like what old people have.  The only difference is that mine will come from behind me instead of in front of me.  It has to be like that to keep my back straight.  The Dr. said that another problem with SMA is that we get scoliosis reall bad, so were gonna do what we can to keep my back straight.

I may be able to walk some now, but sometime I won't be able to.  When this happens I will have a wheel chair that goes by a switch, I'm gonna love that.  Mommy is really worried about my respitory though.  She was told by the Dr. that this is what kills us, and what will make me become a angle in my early teens.  Right now I do ok, but fall-spring is my most difficult time.  Every year it gets worse where I will be hospitilized sometime with a bad respitory infection.  Most kids are by now at least a couple times a year.  I stabilized for some reason and thats why I'm doing so good right now, but someday I will go down hill, and'll have to fight reall hard for my mommy.  She worrys alot about me, and so doesn't her boyfriend Chris, and my Nana.  My 4 year old brother also worries about me alot.  He loves me very much and I love him alot too.

Well if you have any questions e-mail me I'd love to answer you back.

It's Me,  Ian Paul,  sometimes Naughty sometimes nice
