What is the IBEJI Project?
IBEJI is a non-governmental organization registered
as a charity in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. It resulted from a project
begun in 1988 by a small group of volunteers to work with adolescents who
live and work in the streets of Salvador. Today, it is the only project
in the city that accepts and works with adolescents with a history of drug
abuse and problems with the law. IBEJI now functions as a 24-hour shelter
and half-way house for adolescents referred by the Juvenile Authority.
What are our objectives?
To integrate these adolescents into society and their families by helping
them become aware of their rights and obligations as citizens. As a result,
they regain or acquire self-esteem and self-respect, and become productive
members of the community.
How is this achieved?
By offering a safe, healthy environment that shelters them from the dangers
of life on the streets;
Heightening the awareness of the community and law enforcement institutions
about these adolescents' rights and responsibilities;
Making parents and relatives aware of their responsibilities;
Helping return the adolescents to their families when possible and appropriate;
Enabling adolescents to take responsibility for their personal well-being
and growth;
Working from the basis of the Statute of the Child and Adolescent;
Providing psychological help and referrals to drug rehab centers, when
necessary.
