My Kelley Family Story

The Kelley family came from South Carolina to Pike County, Alabama. They then migrated over to Union, Caldwell, and Winn Parishes, and possibly into Lincoln and Grant Parishes. William Kelley, a Methodist minister, and his wife Lavinia had married and settled in Pike County by 1850. By about 1853 they were in Union Parish, Louisiana. The three oldest boys- Isaac, John W., and Albert Ellis- all served for Louisiana in the Civil War. After the Civil War John W. and his wife and family settled in Winn Parish while Albert took a wife and settled in Union or Lincoln Parish. After Albert's first wife died while they were living in Grant Parish he moved to Caldwell Parish where he married again and started a second family. Frank, who was too young at the time to serve in the Civil War, eventually married and settled in Winn Parish but at the turn of the century moved his family to Texas. The parents, William and Lavinia, lived in Winn Parish for a few years and then returned to Union Parish. They both died there and are buried near Downsville.

This Kelley family may have been closely associated with a Shirley family of Darlington, SC, who followed the same migration pattern. Members of the Kelley/Kelly and the Shirley families were joined by several marriages in Louisiana. For detailed information on my Shirley ancestors and their descendants check out the Shirley Family of Louisiana.
