The body is both a source of pleasure and vulnerability. The body both constitutes the physical materiality that is the basis of human subjectivity and serves as the basic means of all social presence. The body's multifaceted and dynamic status forcefully signals its fundamental significance throughout the cultural milieu. The question that Identifiable Remains asks is how does visual representation communicate the importance of the body. Additionally, what is at stake in the body's mediation and reproduction, effects that are inherent in the cinematic medium and other popular forms of media. And ultimately, how are we to interpret and understand the tenuous relationship between signification and the substantive subject. The conference will be held in Coppola Theater, 101 Fine Arts.
