If They Only Knew
That September Gabrielle took the train down to Surrey for the start of the term. The Hadburey Ladies College was an all girls’ school and there were two different factions of ladies that went there. There were the studious quiet ones that usually went on to become housewives, and then there were the ones that smoked, drank and skived off Fridays to take a train or hitch hike to London. They usually went on to be housewives to if that tells you anything about the sixties.

Gabrielle’s roommates were exactly like each of those girls. There was Lori, the petite blonde girl who seemed to never say *anything* but when she did it was usually very insightful. And there was also Lucy, who was loud and always one mark away from expulsion.

Since they had no choice but to live together for nine months, the three girls got along well. All of them hated the school, and Lucy was always coming up with ways to get sent home which were never followed through on, partially because she didn’t have a home to go to, and partially because Lori would never do anything more horrible then not making her bed.

Gabrielle sighed and pushed her hair out of her eyes as she flopped backwards onto her bed. I hate this place, she thought, gritting her teeth and wishing she could be back home with Shaz and George and her parents.

She reached out and grouped around on her bedside table for the picture she had just placed there moments before. It was taken on her front porch; George was smiling cheekily for the camera with his arms around Shaz and Gabrielle. Shaz was laughed as Gabrielle hit Paul round the head, who was a step below them lifting at her skirt and trying to look up it.

She sighed and a head popped into her line of vision, startling her. "Lucy!"

The red head girl laughed and threw her arms around her self "Yes! Me!" she said exuberantly before throwing her arms around Gabrielle, knocking them both back.

"Gerrof me" she laughed, Lucy pulled back and flopped down on the bed next her.

"So" she said, "How was your summer?"

"Good" Gabrielle nodded "How was yours?’

Lucy giggled and put her hand over her mouth looking guilty "Fine… she giggled again and then caught sight of the picture in her hands "Ooh lemme see" she snatched it away.

Gabrielle sighed complying as Lucy gushed over it "Wow, who’s that?" she asked shoving the picture into Gabrielle’s face and pointing to Paul.

"Er…" she blinked and held the photo back "That’s Paul" she said

Lucy giggled "Paul who?" she asked

"Paul McCartney…"

"Ooooh" Lucy ran her finger over Paul’s face "Are you two going together then?" she asked

"Ah, no actually I just met him last week" said Gabrielle. She got up off the bed and went over to the door.

"Hey come back here"

"What is it? I gotta go to the loo" Gabrielle whined, she was leaned against the door frame.

"Who’s this?" she pointed to George and grinned

"George" Gabrielle said shortly and started going down the hall again

"That’s George?" she heard Lucy exclaim to her retreating back.

When she returned to the dorm room Lori was there as well, sitting on her bed reading a book. As usual. They nodded hellos at each other and Gabrielle dropped her self heavily down on her bed. Lucy immediately bounded over to her.

"Is this George, as in skinny next door neighbor George?" she demanded

" Uh" Gabrielle lifted her head to see she was still talking about the picture "Yeah" and she dropped her head back down to stair up at the ceiling.

"You lied!"

"What?" she sat up again "I didn’t, look at him, he is skinny, and he’s my next door neighbor"

"Yeah" snorted Lucy "But you didn’t say it was in a good way"

"You know" Lori said, surprising both of the other girls to look over at her She peered at them over the edge of her glasses, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What one person finds attractive another may find hideous" she said wisely.

"I think he’s gorgeous" Lucy said at last

Gabrielle sighed exasperated "No, he’s *just* George, Luce"
