Large Outdoor Iguana Cage

I was inspired to build this after I saw a page by Catherine Rigby Burdette, of a small, take-apart cage made out of PVC piping and vinyl-covered hardware mesh.

Since I live in the tropics, I can keep all my herps outdoors; I previously had a wooden framed cage for my green iguanas but wanted to make something a bit larger and more durable. This is the result:

The cage is basically an eight-foot cube; each wall measures 8 x 8 ft, as well as the ceiling panel.
Each wall and the ceiling was made separately by joining straight pieces of 1-1/4-inch PVC pipe together with 90-degree elbows and T-joints; the hardware mesh(it came in a 4-ft wide roll 100 feet long) was then cut into 8-ft lengths and fastened to the panels with pull-ties. Each wall panel was then placed upright, held in place, and 4 quarter-inch holes were drilled at each corner thru both panels where they were to be joined. I used 4-inch-long, 1/4-inch carriage bolts (thru those holes) and wing nuts to bolt the panels together at the corners.

Here's another view of the cage:

The ceiling panel was then lifted into place, holes drilled(4 to a side)and the bolts put in place.

For the door, I used the door from the old cage; I modified the design of one of the walls to leave an opening into which I could bolt the old door by its hinges onto an upright pipe.

All that is left is to finish the interior decorations - various branches & live hibiscus bushes, a feeding shelf and a sleeping shelf/perch. Right now there are four large adults(3 females and a possible male)living together in this cage. The females recently laid eggs; I was able to hatch 29 babies, and they can be seen in their own page.
