Motto: Noblesse Oblige Colors: Blue and Gold The National Honor Society is an organization sponsored and supervised by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. According to the constitution, the organization's purpose is to "create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools." The principal of a secondary school approves all activities and decisions of the chapter, names a faculty advisor and appoints a Faculty Council composed of members of the faculty. Membership: Selection is based on oustanding achievement in four areas: scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once membership has been attained, students are responsible for maintaining excellence in these areas. ARCHBISHOP BOLAND CHAPTER: IMMACULATE HEART ACADEMY Eligibility: 1. The candidate must be a member of the junior or senior class who has been in attendance at IHA for at least one semester. 2. The candidate must have achieved a cumulative average of at least 3.6. 3. The candidate must demonstrate outstanding achievement in the areas of character, leadership, and service. 4. The candidate must submit the consideration form by the deadline indicated on the form. NB: Students must understand that membership in NHS is an honor bestowed by the school. No student is "entitled" to membership. Those students who qualify for consideration based on their GPA, will receive a consideration form by the second week of school in September. Students wil have 3-4 weeks to complete the form, and obtain the required signatures. Induction: A ceremony is held in December. All current members attend the ceremony. New members are welcomed into the organization and receive an NHS insignia pin and a membership certificate. Duties and Responsibilities: Service: All NHS members participate in the after-school tutoring program and must be available for private in-school tutoring. In addition, all NHS members are required to do four hours of in school and four hours of community service each quarter, and provide the Service Coordinators with documentation of the service within one week of the end of the quarter. These hours must be over and above those required to meet other obligations. Additional hours are imposed if students are late in submitting their service hour records. Members are also expected to participate in NHS sponsored volunteer activities. Academics: Members submit a copy of each report card to the moderator within two weeks of the end of the marking period. Additional service hours are imposed if students are late submitting their report card copies. Attendance: Members are expected to attend meetings which are held on an as needed basis. Each member is entitled to miss two meetings a year without penalty, with the exception of the Induction Ceremony. Attendance at the Induction Ceremony in December is *MANDATORY.* Dues: The treasurer collects $10.00 dues from each first year member, and $5.00 dues from each second year member. Officers: In May of each year, students interested in a position on the Executive Board may complete an application.The moderator, with input from the standing board, will appoint new officers. Positions on the Executive Board include: President, Vice President, Secretary (2), Treasurer, Service Coordinator (2), Tutor Coordinator, Awards Coordinator, Communications Specialist, and Department Liaisons.
