Rihannsu Names
A person's name, as you should know, is of extreme importance to a Rihannsu. A Rihannsu's name tells a lot about the person and in a culture where one's family relations is crucial, ones name as in the person's word is everything. Also having a quasi-religious significance, a name is a Rihannsu's most important possession for it tells more about the owner than her face, clothes, or possessions ever could. Rihannsu names have three or four parts: The personal name, the locative name, the secret name, and, for members of the nobility, the family name. Each name has its own meaning and significance.

A Rihannsu's first name is bestowed on him at birth by his parents. Its meaning reflects their hopes and aspirations for the child, although not often in a literal sense. For example, parents might name a child 'Ael' which means 'winged', in the hopes that she will soar to the limits of her abilities. Or perhaps they would choose the same name with the intention of associating the child with the qualities of the Element of Air among many other possible reasons. The shadings and connotations of a name go far beyond its simple dictionary definition.

Although the parents bestow the first name before they know the strength within their child, children most often grow into their names, although not always in a way her parents had anticipated. The above named person, Ael, may become an atmospheric transport pilot, showing her skill as a pilot. The second, or locative name describes a person's geographic or social origin. There are three forms of locative names, each describing a different type of background and distinguished by the name's prefix.

The first form of place name begins i- meaning, 'from the city of'. If our example person Ael had been born in the city of Ra'tleihfi, she would be known as Ael i-Ra'tleihfi. The second prefix name begins ir- meaning, 'from the region of'. A region is a rather nebulous term encompassing anything from a small province on a heavily populated world such as ch'Rihan to an entire colony world, depending on the local population. If our Ael had been born in the Mnaehe province of ch'Rihan, she would be called Ael ir-Mnaehe, Winged One of the Mnaehe Province.

The final and rarest form of the locative name is used only by nobility who have a family name other than the one they were born with. Usually this happens through marriage, although occasionally adoption will require this. In this case, the person changing their name would take their old family name as their locative name using the prefix e-, meaning 'of the family of'. Continuing with our example, let's say Ael is a noble of the Khellian family. We'll discuss families in a moment. For now suffice it to say that her full name is Ael ir-Mnaehe t'Khellian. Now she wishes to marry another noble, a man of the Sahen family from Ra'tleihfi. His name is Nniol i-Ra'tleihfi tr'Sahen. When they marry, however, he changes his name to Nniol e-Sahen tr'Khellian. She would still be Ael ir-Mnaehe t'Khellian, since she is not leaving her family to join another.

Only Rihannsu who are members or servants of noble families have hfihar (noble House or family) names. These names are simple in form, consisting of the name of the hfihar prefixed with a t' for female members and a tr' for male members (the neuter prefix for the hfihar in general is s'). This name is only used when identifying someone or when addressing someone of great importance. Some Romulans put Cha' in front of their last names, rather than t' or tr'. Cha' is a more ancient version, so it is much less common than t' or tr'.  Thus, a male member of hfihar s'Khellian would have tr'Khellian as his third name while a female member of the same hfihar would use t'Khellian. Looking back at the example characters from the last lecture, we can now see the derivation of the full names of Ael ir-Mnaehe t'Khellian and her husband Nniol e-Sahen tr'Khellian. Again, only members of the nobility or those who are indentured to noble families have hfihar names. If Ael were a commoner, she would simply be known as Ael ir-Mnaehe.

A Rihannsu's fourth name or 'rehei' is one of her deepest and most intimate secrets. Unlike other names, a rehei is not bestowed on you by someone else. Instead, you look inside yourself and, if you look carefully enough, you will find your "rehei". The meaning of a rehei is that which best describes it's owner. As such, the rehei is shared only with close family and intimate friends, because to know a person's rehei is to understand the depths of their soul.
