ILAYANGUDI - Ancient

The ILAYANGUDI roots can be traced from BC 3rd and 2nd Century. The full sized MAHAVIRAR Statue outside the present Rajendra Choleeswarar Temple proves that this ancient township of Southern Tip was influenced by Samanam since thousands of years ago.

History says, MAHAVIRAR the 72nd Saint (Theerthangarar) of Zainism attained Eternal Bliss during BC 527 on his 72nd Age. The Eighth Successor of Mahavirar BHATIRA BAGHU MUNIVAR was the Religious Chieftain of CHANDRA GUPTA MOWRIYA (BC 322-298) (Grand Father of Empiror Ashoka), who sent VAISAGA MUNIVAR to south to spread Zainism (Samanam) in Pandiya and Chola countries. This peirod is the same period of Alexandar the Great. It is believed that Samanam is introduced to ILAYANGUDI during the same period.

During BC 3rd Century Buddham introduced to Tamil Land by Empiror ASHOKA through his brother MAHINDRAR. Unlike Samanam, Buddha Statue is not found in Ilayangudi, but the Public Water Tank is still called as THEARAR OORANI. Thearar is tamil term for Buddhist Monk. This leads us to conclude that there could have been a Buddha Vikar near Thearar Oorani that time.

The present Shivan temple was built by Chola King Rajendra Cholan (AD 1012-1044). The temple is called as Rajendra Chola Eswara Temple. This temple might be built as Zain Temple originally by Chola King and later converted as Hindu Temple or original Samana Palli has been converted as Saivaite Temple by the King. The present Manju Puthur Chettiyars (Local Chettiyars of Ilayangudi) were Samanars originally and later converted as Saivaites. When the temple converted as Hindu Temple, the Mahavirar Statue was kept outside temple, while Hindu Deities occupied inside. There is an old 11th Century Stone Edict belongs to Chola Dynasty.

Its beyond doubt that ILYANGUDI was one of the ancient township influenced by SAMANAM & BUDDHAM during pre ISLAMIC AGE.
