	Introduction: The present Panchayat Board system was introduced in India during 1802 modifying the old Tamil Kings Village Administration. The MUNCHIEF post was created modifying the old NATTAMAIKARAR Post (Village President). Munchief was given the authority of Court in small and petty cases. Panchayat Union concept was founded by British Salem District Collector Mr. Stokis during 1884. Accordingly, Union Board were formed and each village or ward representative becomes member of the union. President of the Union is elected from the Ward Members. During 1920 more power were transferred to Panchayat Union, the same year Madras Presidency Government passed Village Panchayat Law, later it was amended during 1930. During 1935 Panchayats are controlled by Panchayat Officer appointed by Political Party level. Later, during 1945 new law has been passed affiliating all Panchayats and Unions under District Collector. Old Ramnad District: In the old undivided Ramnad District, there were 19 Panchayat Boards during 1920 and during 1939-40 there were 26 Big Panchayat Boards & 168 small Panchayats. During 1948 Ramnad District was having total of 27 Panchayat Boards. During 1950 new law has been passed under which, each village having more than 500 members should have a panchayat and population of more than 5000 was classified as first grade Panchayat Union. During 1972, Ramnad District was having 32 Development Boards or Panchayat Unions, ILAYANGUDI WAS ONE AMONG THE 32 PANCHAYAT UNION.
	When the Ramnad District was divided into three different Districts for administrative convenience during 1986 namely, Ramnad, Viruthunagar and Sivagangai ILAYANGUDI was defined as TALUK under Sivagangai District. Ilayangudi First Panchayat Election: During 1971 there was Panchayat Board Election for the newly formed ILAYANGUDI TOWN PANCHAYAT. There were two popular candidates contesting for the President Post namely Al Haaj. V.M. Peer Mohamed and Janab. V.M. Hussain. Al Haaj V.M. Peer Mohamed was contesting on Saw symbol and Janab V.M. Hussain was contesting on Scissors symbol. V.M. Hussain was elected as President in that election. Later, during the demise of DMK Government & collapse of Madras Corporation by Master Roll Scandal, and Emerge of AIADMK Government Local Bodies elections were withheld by Government due to various political reasons. Later during AIADMK regime there was another election held for local bodies. In that election Mr.Wahab Howth was elected as President. Recent Panchayat Elections: Only during 1996 the Panchayat Elections were held again after very long gap. As a part of political vindictive attitude towards the Muslim community by the politicians, Muslim populated areas were declared either as Reserved Constituency or Women Constituency, creating political leadership vacuum among the Muslim Community. In that process, ILAYANGUDI the popular Muslim Town's Panchayat President post was declared as Women Reserved constituency, forcing the evacuation of Muslim Leadership in the town. But, our Muslim Women Candidates have scattered the political vindictive plans and emerged in the last two consecutive elections as Presidents filling the vacuum.
