TERMINOLOGY
This is our "Dictionary Page"
Vocabulary from "PERSONAL PAGE":
UMBANDA: it is the name given by the spirit who,  speaking through the medium Mr. Celio de Moraes, in l908 settled the rules for a "new" religion in Brazil. It is said that the meaning of the name
comes from the contraction of two Sanscrit words: OM or AUM : meaning "God"  and BANDA:
meaning  "by the side of". Therefore the meaning of this word would be: "THOSE WHO ARE BY THE SIDE OF GOD"
INCORPORACIÓN: This Spanish word has no specific translation to English. It describes the process of energetic interaction between the medium  and the spirit that for a period of time "wears" the medium's body and expresses him/herself  through it  using the medium's whole body as if it was
his/her own body.
MEDIUM: A person who claims to have the power to receive the spirits of the dead in his/her body.
BABALORISHA: A person (male) who enroled in the Traditional African Religion and after seven
years of study is ordained. (a priest).
THE HOUSE :  name given to the temple, because the temple for us is the house of our Gods  and our own spiritual house.
DE IEMANJÁ: The word "de" in Spanish means "of" in English. It is placed after the name to show
belonging, and after it, the name of the Orishá who rules the person's life.
THE PRINCIPE CUSTODIO: Name of a prince from Africa, refugeed in Brazil when the English conquered his land. He was the one who brought the ancient tradition of his nation, called Ge-ge , to Brazil.
AXÉ: Force, power, tradition.
NATION GE-GE: There are different ways to worship the Orishás, depending on which region of Africa the tradition came from. They are basically alike but some distinctions can be made between the colours given to the Orishás, order of them in the pantheon, etc. So,  to speak of a nation is to say which is the tradition or the way to practice the ancient religion of  a temple. Nation Ge-ge is one of these traditions, it is a pure one. There are mixed traditions too, like Nation Ge-ge / Nagó for example that is a mixture between two nations: Ge-ge and Nagó. This one, has lots of simmilarities with the rituals and tradition of Ge-ge but among them there are also points that have nothing to do with Ge-ge, and they are aspects that come from the other tradition.
ILÉ AXÉ BOMÍ: The language used in our faith is an African one, it's known as Yoruba. Ilé means "house", and particularly speaking about the faith it means "religion house" or "temple". Axé, as  we have said previously, means "force". B is a prefix that means " a lot of" and Omí means "water".
Therefore Ilé Axé Bomí, the name of our temple, means "Temple of the force of a lot of water", or "Temple of the power of the sea".This name was chosen for our house because the two Babalorishás who run the temple are sons of the same Orishá: Iemanyá Bomí who is herself the power of the Sea.
