Kadir Nelson was born in Washington DC and grew up in Atlantic City, NJ, and San Diego, CA. A graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, he is an internationally recognized artist who has created images for Dreamworks SKG, Nike, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, The New Yorker Scholastic Press. Most notably, Nelson was the Conceptual Artist for Steven Spielberg's feature film, Amistad, and the companion book, Give Us Free. He describes his work as "very spiritual" and "emotional" and gives credit to Ernie Barnes, N.C. Wyeth, Norman Rockwell and Thomas Blackshear, among others, as having influenced his work.
Nelson has received national recognition for his work and was awarded gold and silver medals from the Society of Illustrators in New York. He resides in San Diego, CA with his wife and two children. |
