Sloth Notes

  • Sloths can turn head 180º without moving their body
  • Males have a unique color pattern (similar to a fingerprint) on their back
  • A 2-toed sloth has 6 neck vertebrae
  • A 3-toed sloth has 9 neck vertebrae
  • 2-toed sloth; Choloes hoffmanni (Perezoso de dos dedos)
    • Nocturnal; arboreal; solitary; feeds on leaves/fruits, occasionally lizards, bird eggs, and nestlings
  • 3-toed sloth; Bradypus variegates (Perezoso de tres dedos)
    • diurnal; smaller legs and longer arms
  • don't drink water, get moisture from leaves
  • high-pitched calls=mating cries
  • digest using bacteria
  • bone goes to bottom of nails
  • if a baby falls out of the nest, the mother won't go down to get it
