Gandalf
Gandalf the Grey is very fond of the hobbits and the Shire and occasionally visits them. His last visit was to celebrate Bilbo's eleventy-first birthday. It was then that he realised that Bilbo's ring was in fact the One Ring forged by the Dark Lord Sauron in Mordor. He realises that this ring will have to be destroyed and sends Frodo and Sam on a mission to do this. He tells them first to take it to Rivendell, one of the homes of the elves. Here he hopes it will be safe.
At the council of Elrond in Rivendell, Gandalf volunteers to guide the fellowship to Mordor and help Frodo in any way he can. But on the dark road through Morior, Gandalf falls into the abyss while attempting to fight off a firey demon of the ancient world; the Balrog. However, as his task on earth is not yet complete he is sent back to complete it. He appears dramatically to Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli in Fangorn forest and leads them to Edoras, the home of King Theoden. Gandalf the White helps Theoden and Aragorn win the battle against Saruman's army at Helms Deep.
