Down with the imperialist G8 Summit!

The destiny of imperialism will be determined by the united struggle of the
workers and the oppressed peoples of the world!

The International League of People’s Struggle (ILPS) calls on all anti-imperialist and democratic forces to unite to oppose imperialism and reaction and to join the actions to expose and oppose the G8 summit in Genoa, Italy from July 20-23, 2001.

The most powerful imperialist powers are gathering in Genoa, Italy, to plan their ominous agenda to counter the rising tide of the just and revolutionary struggles of the workers and the oppressed people’s throughout the world.  They intend to put up a show of unity in the face of the unprecedented crisis of the world capitalist system and to hide the intensification of the contradictions between themselves.

In the face of the most intensified crisis of the world capitalist system, the rivalries and the contradictions amongst the imperialist powers have intensified. The emergence of the European Union (EU) and the efforts of the US imperialism to convert the Americas into a common market, as well as the Japanese imperialist maneuvers in the Asia Pacific region are clear indications of the intensified inter-imperialist contradictions.

This is also manifested in the imperialist interventions and provocations in the strategically important regions like the Middle East, Palestine and the Balkans. The phenomenal growth of religious fundamentalism, ethnic rivalries and national chauvinism is an expression of the imperialist designs to divide the people and to prevent them from waging real struggles against their oppressors.

The blatant and all-round attacks on the hard-won democratic and economic rights of the working people in the imperialist countries, in the form of assaults on trade unions, casualisation of labour, growing unemployment, and the shrinking of social security entitlements are all designed to intensify the exploitation of labour and to destroy working class organisation.

The increasing levels of fascism and racist violence hand in glove with the increasing police brutality and the introduction of the draconian laws such as the Anti-terror laws, anti-immigration laws and the criminalization of dissent negating the international conventions on freedom of speech and association are designed to intensify oppression in order to facilitate intensified exploitation. These are expressions of sharpening of wage labour/capital contradiction but also of the inter-imperialist rivalries.

It is under such conditions that the imperialist powers raise such bogus ideas as “globalism” and the New World Order and organise Summit after summit in order to hide its decrepit nature and to facilitate its continued domination of the world. At the same time it uses slogans such globalisation to accelerate the plunder of the human and natural resources through out the world.

But the workers and oppressed peoples are fighting back.  They decry the intolerable suffering that imperialist globalization has imposed on the people of the world.

The advancing struggle against imperialism and all reaction has taken various forms and has spread across the world.  Millions of people world-wide have risen up in rallies against the imperialist agenda in Seattle, Manila, Vancouver, Washington DC, Sydney, Davos, Prague, Okinawa, Quebec, and Gothenburg and all over Latin America and Asia including the big demonstrations that directly challenge the IMF, World Bank and the WTO during their meetings.  Armed revolutionary struggles are being waged in a number of oppressed countries against imperialist domination and client states that are the instruments of imperialism in imposing such domination.

We call on all anti-imperialist and progressive forces and all those who oppose exploitation and oppression to strengthen their unity in an international united front against imperialism and reaction.  The people will prevail!
