Brandain is one of my favourite storytellers, and a fine bard. This is a story he told at one of
the Serenity sponsored storytelling nights.
Brandain says, "I'll not stand for this.. If ye care to watch as ye listen, ye'd best turn this
way."
Brandain shifts his weight.
Brandain clears his throat.
Brandain says, "This is a piece of history lost to all but the long memories of the Arkati."
Brandain says, "Told again to we simple folk in a song of one of the Stones of Virtue,
though the significance may have been lost."
Brandain says, "To some."
Brandain says, "A long time past, following the Undead War, a small village lived in peace
somewhere to the southeast of Wehnimer's Landing, given no attention by the great
Empires of the time."
Brandain says, "These were good folk, devoted in all ways to the Pantheon of Light."
Brandain says, "Many times they had been accosted by nearby temples devoted to the
ways of Lornon, seeking unwilling subjects in their dark rites."
Brandain says, "One day, a host of priests of the Serpent came among them. By force of
arms, the folk were gathered in a large square in the centre of town."
Brandain says, "The townsfolk were stood in rows and approached by a burly Priest
wielding a sharp, jagged-edged dagger."
Brandain says, "As he stood in front of each of the townsfolk, he asked a simple question.
Some agreed to what he said, and were set free."
Brandain says, "Some shook their heads and defied the man, knowing full well what would
happen."
Brandain says, "As more and more of the townsfolk denied the priests, the green grass
was littered with the corpses of men and women who had had the courage to say 'no,',
their throats slit open."
Brandain says, "Blood stained the ground red that day."
Brandain says, "The burly Priest approached a young boy, of no more than ten years. He
held the dagger to the boy's throat, and asked the simple question."
Brandain says, ""Will you give your life to the Serpent?""
Brandain says, "The boy stood silent, gazing into the man's hard eyes."
Brandain says, "He was silent too long, and the Priest moved to slit the boy's throat, as he
had done to so many other good folk that day."
Brandain says, "The dagger flashed out, to tear the boy's throat out.. It struck skin like
stone, and shattered."
Brandain says, "The boy's face lit up in understanding, and reached out in his own turn; In
one swift movement, he snapped the Priest's throat and let him fall."
Brandain says, "Other Priests stood dumbfounded about the square, and with amazing
speed the boy moved about the green, killing the servants of the Serpent."
Brandain says, "He stood alone, his own kin having run in terror at the marvelous
occurence, and gazed around at the bodies that littered the once-peaceful town."
Brandain says, "Storm-clouds formed and broke, rain washing down to cleanse the town
and it's folk. In the thunder that ensued, a booming voice rolled out over the lands."
Brandain says, ""Go forth now into the world, my mortal son," it said, "and take up thy
holy mission.""
Brandain says, "And this was the birth of Voln the Liberator."
