Since 1986, this agency has provided education-based behavioral programs for adults and juveniles in San Diego County. The curricula follows a precise design sequence to lead participants from a general level of discussion to a specific behavioral commitment. The design facilitates a step-by-step sequence to build and reinforce an intrinsic decision-making pattern; a distinct departure from most corrections techniques that emphasize extrinsic controls. Change is more enduring when a person is guided to make a decision to change behavior because he or she perceives it to be personally advantageous, not because of what will happen if he or she does not.
The curricula utilizes a group process format. Rather than being an observer with minimal participation, participants experience the session, rather than listen to it. It is conducted in an interactive format that includes techniques of role playing, sequenced questions, pairing and small group discussions, and guided visualization.
The programs are provided at convenient locations throughout the county. Average number of participants is twelve (12.) Participants are assigned by diversion, probation, parole, courts, or are self-referred.
Participants pay all costs of the program resulting in no cost to the referring agency, local, state, or federal government. Discounts are given for pre-payment, two or more programs, or low income.
The foundation of the program rests on the participant accepting personal responsibility for his or her actions. |
