Whilst most people come to Systema to learn self-defence, some situations are far from life-threatening. At such a time, some actions are wholly inappropriate. This is why we learn a range of restraint and immobilisation methods through experimentation.

This freedom in training allows use to vary the level of response to the needs of the moment. For example, in helping a drunk relative retain their dignity, pinning them to the floor is not going to acheive much, but you may need to really work if somebody is totally freaking out!

It is also useful to understand how locks and restraints work and where they create tension and affect the form of the body. In this way you can learn to escape and deny somebody the oppotunity of controlling you.

I'd like to thank our photographer, Remco deVries (pictured left). He's camera shy and had to be restrained!
