Maria Elena - Jimmy Dorsey (Gilles Paul, Sequencer)

I am researching the DELRIE (DELRIO, DELLRIE) and WHITE families who, upon migrating from North Carolina and Texas respectively, settled primarily in the Louisiana parishes of Natchitoches and Rapides.  Most of these ancestors settled in or near the communities of Gorum and Flatwoods.  Decades later several Delrie families settled in Grant Parish and possibly the adjacent parishes.

My grandfather, Eugene DELRIE, was from Rapides Parish, Louisiana.  He was born 16 Jun 1887 and died 11 Mar 1964.  Eugene married Ophelia WHITE, also of Rapides Parish.  She was born 23 Sep 1894 and died 12 Dec 1953.  Both are buried in Flatwoods Cemetery, Flatwoods, Rapides Parish, Louisiana.

According to family sources, Eugene and Ophelia had five sons and four daughters: Philip, Henry, Willie Ambrose (my dad), Overton Jake, John, Mary Delie, Irene, Loretta, and Myrtle Lean.  All are deceased except Irene.

Eugene’s father was Severe ('Sylvester') Delrie.  I was told that he might have lived in either Gorum or Cloutierville in Natchitoches Parish.  Reportedly, Severe and his wife, Delphine RACHAL, only had six children -- all sons: Jessie, Amos, Sylvester, Jr., Eugene, Dave, and Willis.   I do not know whether any other children were born of this union.

The earliest record I have of my Delrie ancestor is that of Victor DelRio who married Marie MORIN.  Thus far, nothing is known about them except for the name of one child, Gregorio, who was born about 1827, and died about 1877.  Gregorio married Marie Josephine BASCO (b. 03 Mar 1831, d. 24 Oct 1894) in Natchitoches, Natchitoches Parish, on 07 Feb 1848.

Ophelia's parents were George William WHITE and Clara (Bynog) BAYONOGUE.  George's father, John Thomas WHITE, was born in North Carolina between 1833-1834.  John Thomas married Adeline MONETTE in 1858 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana.

Richard & Evelyn Delrie
