Monday,
27 August, 2001, 07:33 GMT 08 ... experiment has shown how illiterate street
children
can quickly teach ... might play in educating India's illiterate millions
http://www.oneworld.net/guides/streetchildren/front.shtml
Street children: why? - There are at least 18 million street children in India, up to 40
million in Latin America and over 100 million worldwide. Children end up on city streets
because of poverty, dysfunctional families (e.g. mother takes new partner, neglect,
physical or sexual abuse, alcoholism), or abandonment because of mental or physical
handicap. All are unloved and, so far as society is concerned, 'disposable'. Be it Delhi,
Djakarta or Durban, the numbers of street children are increasing everywhere

Message on World
AIDS Day
The world after 11 September has made us
all think more deeply about the kind of world we want for our children. In the new and uncertain environment into which we have been propelled, we
feel more deeply than ever the need to hold fast to a vision of peace and security, but
also to one of human security. The
United Nations mission to improve the lives of peoples everywhere has become even
more urgent. That means redoubling our efforts to turn
back HIV/AIDS.
