Wow, another highly fun Medal of Honor game, and it lives up to the hype. It has some flaws, mostly in the controls and the level structure, but if you're a fan, or even a newcomer to the FPS genre, MOHFL is the best place to start. It's very difficult however, something that I was not expecting. It's got other aspects from the other games as well. Once again, awesome graphics and sounds come into play. The game has a unique graphical style: a sickly dark and gritty look to it that is truly horrifying. When you do the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach, you can almost feel the cold wet sand squish under your boots. Planes drop bombs all over the beach, and huge explosions of beach sand erupt all over the screen. There's plenty of action on the screen too. There's lots of gunfire all around, and then you have lots of soldiers. Of course, the framerate is frequently sacrificed here and there for these fixes, but it's worth it. Plus those explosions are fricking pretty. Those missions are very unique. Each one is varied, and the locations change. You start your game on Omaha Beach and end it in a hangar with a prototype plane. Along the way, you'll have to plant explosives and rescue men that will help you unravel the game's awesome plot. I won't spoil anything, I'll just let you find out. The gameplay is always fun and exciting. Shooting Nazis has never been funner. You'll shoot them in the chest and think that they're dead, just to find out that they got back up and killed you. You can smack them with your gun or throw grenades at them. But be warned...they'll throw the grenade back at you! The AI isn't perfect, but it's better than most games; basically it's just a bonus to the already fun gameplay. One really fun aspect of the gameplay is the sniper rifle shots. Capping a Nazi in the head from 100 yards really is fun. The towns, buildings, countrysides, and everything unique to WWII is very accurately done. It's just too bad that the game is incredibly linear, and there are invisible barriers galore. The Medal of Honor series is famous for its sounds. Frontline excels just like the older games did in this category. It even does it better this time around. The music is still top-notch quality. Deep, flowing music never ceases as you journey around the countryside. Or when an enemy comes, the music picks up a notch. The sound effects are equally as powerful. There are different sound effects when bullets hit different objects. The gunshots are lifelike, and the M1 Garand's "ping" sound is even there after you've emptied a whole magazine. Everything down to the voice acting is realistic in presentation. The gameplay is superb. You can choose between several different configurations including MOH: Sharpshooter and the Classic Medal of Honor controls. Personally I like Sharpshooter because I'm used to games like Red Faction and Deus Ex, but everyone has their own choice. The zooming in feature is perfectly used, and you can call HQ at any time for hints with one press of a button. Good stuff. My only problem is aiming. Your gun seems very jerky to use when aiming, so most of the time you will have to zoom in to shoot even when you're standing right next to an enemy. That's not a good thing. I think it is because of the game's 30 to 60 frames inconsistancies. It causes the crosshairs to jerk around just a bit too much. This aiming system is pure BS, because it's impossible to line up an enemy and blast away at it. You can't shoot a moving enemy, don't even try it. It's best to shoot at an enemy by pressing L1 to zoom in while you're standing still. I think that this game really should have benefited with mouse compatability. What's up with the AI? We all know that when you empty a clip into the enemy's head, they should die. Not so with Frontline. They're also very predictable. By the middle part of the game, the player knows just how many bullets it takes to kill an enemy, and if the enemy will die from a head shot or not. That's a problem. Also, there is no multiplayer whatsoever in this game. MOH games have always had outstanding graphics, this is no excpetion! Only some frequent slowdown damper the experience of a lot of action happening on the screen. Bombs explode, water flies all around you, people scream, tanks bomb you, airplanes bomb you, and it usually doesn't drop below 25 frames or so. Medal of Honor: Frontline was the first great FPS game of 2002. Buy it, you will not regret it! |
