Animal Crossing, now that’s a game that just seems like it’s made for little kids, at least that’s what I thought when I first saw it. Boy was I wrong. At first glance this game won’t seem like much because the graphics are just plain terrible. They look like they could have been done on the Nintendo 64 in its early years. The characters are pretty jaggy and the entire layout just isn’t much to look at. Fortunately, Animal Crossing isn’t about graphics. It’s about Gameplay. Animal Crossing is set in a virtual world that runs in real time. Completely. If it’s 5:23 pm on Tuesday, December 6, 2002, then that’s what time it is in the game. You start off trying to buy a house from the local shop owner, but since you don’t have the money he makes you work for it. This part of the game isn’t that bad but it can get a little repetitive trying to scrounge up all the money you need. There are also the locals. You aren’t the only one who lives in your town. At any time villagers can come and go as they please moving in and out. They provide odd jobs for you and will sometimes mail you letters. The major downside to this game is that it can get VERY repetitive. Early in the game all you do is fish, because that’s mostly all you can do to make money. Sure you can sell seashells from the seashore (…heh), but they aren’t worth that much and making the long trips back to the shop will get tedious. One way to cut down on the repetitiveness is to have your friends play as well. The game allows four different players to live in the town and they can also interact with each others houses. You could also find a friend that also has the game and visit their town by putting their memory card into your Gamecubes B slot. Once you get past the first 10 hours of the game it starts to get more fun. This is mostly because you start getting mad amounts of side quests. There’s the museum, which consists of finding fossils, fish, insects, and paintings. You could also gather fruit from trees. All that being said, I personally think that anyone who wants to just have good fun in a game should check out Animal Crossing. Just make sure you have some friends that want to play too. There’s nothing like competing to see who can get the biggest house the fastest. --Kryhs aka "The Beav" |
