This is a game that took me by surprise. Early this year, I had heard it was coming to the PS2. I also heard that unlike its earlier games, it was going to be 3D. At the time, I didn't think much of it, because let's face it: the last games sucked bad. They had that sort of GameBoy graphical quality, and everything was just a mess. Of all the games of 2001, this one is the most addictive. No, this isn't the most addictive game of 2001, it's the most addictive game ever. This sort of thing should be illegal. Running people over, shooting gangs and foes with the shotgun, or pushing cars off hills, and stealing ice cream trucks is just plain fun. If you want to do something in a game, you can do it in Grand Theft Auto III. It is truly a revolution. There's more, too. If you don't want to play naughty, you can just steal an ambulance and drive injured pedestrians to the hospital. Or take a taxi and make a few bucks driving people to their destinations. Take a police car or a tank and kill criminals. Steal a boat, drive it around in the water. Shoot helicopters down...hell, you can even fly an airplane! This is a terrific game, and it's highly playable and replayable. You'll love it. It's also interactive thanks to the pedestrians and their slang. We still are hearing the pedestrians say new things, and it's hilarious. They interact well too, thanks to the gangs, carjackers, pimps, hookers, and criminals on the streets. Gangs have their own signature cars, souped up versions of regular cars featured in the game. If you steal a gang member's car when another gang member is behind you, there will be a car pursuit. Gang members tend to be extremely dangerous, and they don't like you on their turf. Sure, early in the game everybody loves you because they think you're nice. But do a dozen missions and see the difference. By the end of the game, every gang member in town is on you. You have the Yakuza, Yardies, Mafia, Diablos, Southside Hoods, Columbian Cartel, and more. This game defines freedom. You're driving down the road, and all of a sudden a 70 year old woman accidentally wrecks into you. You pull her out of the car, beat her to death with a baseball bat, steal her car, and run her over with it. Ahh, power. The town is huge! It consists of three huge islands, and you only start out on one! To get further, you must play some more. And that's no chore! The missions are extremely unique, and the script is one of the best in any video game. The voice acting is flawless, and it was done by a few Hollywood figures. The story is mature, and the themes are adult-oriented. Basically, it's the best in a long time. This game is great, that's all you need to know. Please, buy it now! Even if you don't own a PS2, or if you don't think you will like the game, I will prove you wrong. Everyone likes it, and you will too. |
