Flowers Of Chandigarh

Chandigarh: Punjab once was a state without a capital city. Though there was a temporary Secretariat at Simla in Himachal, the state leaders realised the gravity of the situation and determined to have their own capital city. The vast city of Chandigarh was selected and the responsibility of planning and construction was given over to Le Corbusier- the world famous city architect, his brother Pierre Jinert, the English couple Maxwell Fry, Karbu, Jain Drew as well as a number of top Indian architects. Chandigarh, the present capital city came into being at the foot of Siwalik Range. This revolution in city planning, architecture and sculpture occured between 1950-53. Though the capital of two states, it is administered by the Central Government. Since 1986 it has been decided to include it in Punjab on langauge basis. This ultra-modern cityat an altitude of 383 m is 114 sq km in area. It has 47 sectors minus the unluckly 13. Each sector is completed in itself comprising markets and shopping centres. The sectors are connected by state transport buses, autos, rickshaws and taxis. But the city seems to depend on cars for transport. The Secretariate, State Library, super markets, Sukhna Lake, Gulab Bag, Shantikunj, Moonlitght Garden, Bougainvillea garden, the museum, High Court, Vidhan Sabha and University, each building is a fine specimen of modern art and architecture.

Spring is the best time to visit Chandigarh. All over the city flowers bloom in profusion. The roadside of this planned city is a riot of colours, even the sky and the air look colourful and gay. Even the buff coloured Cassia becomes peerless and Chandigarh becomes an enchanting city. Chandigarh Tourism Dept organises 2 conducted tours of the city daily. On Sundays trips are arranged to Pinjore as well from 111-113, Sector-17B, Chandigarh-17, 22548/41761.

One can visit Chandigarh on the way to Simla or from Delhi and one day is sufficient for the purpose. Tourist can arrange with hired autos to show them round. But one has to be on one's guard against possible harrasment by taxi, auto or rickshaw owners. The station is 8 km from the city. Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) buses transport passengers off trains to the city. The bus terminus is in Sector 17, at the heart of the city. At the ISBT bus std you get a Post Office, Tourist Office, restaurant and cloak room services. The Rly City booking is on the second storey of the terminus. It is more convenient to tour Chandigarh by bus.
