Thyroid is a gland situated in the neck. It produces two important hormones T3 & T4 which have an effect on practically all systems of the body. Diseases of the thyroid can cause alterations in hormone secretion, enlargement of the gland or both. Any disease of the thyroid will either cause hormones to be decreased(hypothyroidism) or increased(hyperthyroidism). It is not always possible to find the cause of thyroid disease but one of the causes of hypothyroidism is iodine deficiency. Dietary iodine can be increased by consuming iodised salt but it must be kept inind that excess iodine is also harmful. Thyroid disease is usually first noticed due to a swelling in the neck just over the region of the voice box or due to significant change in weight & appetite. Blood tests are required to confirm hypo or hyperthyroidism. Once the diagnosis is made, appropriate therapy needs to be started. Some patients recover after few years or months of medication & need no further treatment while some may have to take the medicines for life. Homeopathy offers better chances of a permanent cure since the treatment is based on the person's individual constitution.
