A PROPOSAL FOR IMPROVED SERVICE AND GREATER UTILIZATION OF THE FAIRMOUNT BRANCH

Public Meetings Concluded
The MBTA has concluded the first round of public meetings for its Indigo Line/Fairmount Branch Phase 1 Improvement Study. During the months of November and December 2001, residents, the business community, and political leaders representing the neighborhoods of Four Corners/Codman Square, Hyde Park, Uphams Corner and Mattapan were invited to list their goals and objectives for the Indigo Line. The overwhelming consensus was that the neighborhoods abutting the existing Fairmount Branch deserve service equivalent to that enjoyed by MBTA riders in other neighborhoods of the city. Thanks to all who participated! The MBTA's consultant for the study, KKO & Associates, will compile information gathered at the public meetings and report back to the Project Steering Committee. KKO plans to issue a final recommendation by April 2002.

The Indigo Line - as a mixture of blue and purple, the color indigo reflects the line’s hybrid quality, as cross between rapid transit and traditional commuter rail.

The proposed Indigo Line is an exciting new initiative put together by the MBTA Advisory Board, a watchdog agency representing the 175 cities and towns in the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (Boston, MA), and the Greater Four Corners Action Coalition, a neighborhood group in the Boston borough Dorchester.

The proposal calls for the cost-effective transformation of an existing commuter rail line.

Known as the Fairmount Branch, the right-of-way travels through the densely-populated, inner-city neighborhoods of Dorchester, Mattapan, and Hyde Park. The current route is characterized by long distances between stations and long waits between trains. This level of service does not meet the needs of the residents who abut the line.

The new Indigo Line would transform service in the corridor from commuter rail to rapid transit, to better meet the local travel patterns of the neighborhoods through which it travels.
