After getting my Master degree
at the University of Arizona, and having a major in Architecture ( a five
year degree from the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa), I moved to
San Francisco, California where I worked in several firms from residential
design to commercial design firms. In my last year in the USA I worked on green
building assessment tools at HPS and decided to returned to Portugal in 2002 in
order to start my PhD on that subject. In 2009 I turned in my thesis
entitled: Environmental building certification in Portugal : the case of
vernacular rehabilitation in the protected areas. I am now pursuing a consulting
career on building environmental certification.
Biosphere 2
(Tucson, Arizona) designed by Phil Hawes. This building is an example of an intense interdisciplinary relationship between architects, environmentalists and scientists. |
Leça da Palmeira tidal pools- these pools were designed by Siza Vieira and are integrated in the rocks | ||
The Commerzbank
(Frankfurt, Germany) Designed by Norman Foster. The eco-tower is a skyscraper with naturally ventilated skin and gardens in the sky. |
Santa Maria do Bouro monastery -designed by Souto de Moura, it is a 600 years building now converted into an luxurious austere looking tourist resort. |

The ECP is a project
which achieved an environmental certification by LiderA- class A+. It is the case of a 2007 retrofitted rural house turned into a field station for ecology students, located in the National Park of Peneda Gerês. |
The California Academy of Sciences was built in 2008 and is the greenest building in California. It is located in the Golden Gate Park of San Francisco |
Born in Lisbon, I am now 38 years old. Most of my life was spent trying to understand the Portuguese
architecture and urban planning. Soon after graduating in 1994 I realized
my concerns towards ecology and architectural rehabilitation could be combined,
and that is when my research in vernacular architecture and bio climatic
design started. My work in the MISART (Modelling of a Tourist, Environmental
and Rural System) project, which I joined in 1995, helped me realize I
should continue my studies abroad. I started my Master degree at the University
of Arizona in August 1997. My thesis is called "Preserving Vernacular Architecture
with Environmental Concerns".
In the summer of 2000 I got
married with Henrique Pereira, a biologist studying at Stanford.
Here is a photo of us at the Mosteiro de Santa Maria do Bouro and a photo
of our baby Julia born in 2002 and our son Daniel born in2005. Henrique'web page contains
some more information about our family and our fun time spent in the USA. In
2002 we returned to Portugal and in 2005 moved to Braga. As part of my PhD
thesis I designed and built The Peneda Field Station in Castro Laboreiro which
became the first LiderA classified retrofitted building achieving a A+ level.
