Cumberland  House
Business
Today, Cumberland House is a different community.  The Hudson's Bay Company is no longer here but in its place is The Northern Store.  Other businesses have cropped up too.  Most, if not all, the employees of the businesses are local, in contrast from days gone by, when most of the employees were outsiders.

The people of the community are still close to the land, and perhaps that would explain the number of Outfitters there are in the area.  They have made a thriving business of hunting and fishing.  The Outfitters are using their traditional hunting and fishing skills to their advantage to fit the modern life of today.

The old government farm is still in operation, though today it is run by the Cumberland House Development Corporation.  The farm is situtated on Spruce Island alongside Pine Island, where the village of Cumberland House is located.  Spruce Island is only accessible by a locally made wooden bridge.

The Northern

The Northern Store of Cumberland House is a great place to shop.  They sell all sorts of things from groceries (including fresh meats and vegetables), clothing for the whole family, home electronics & home furnishings, hardware, and sporting goods.

One unique thing of the Northern Store, which was originally The Hudson's Bay Co., is that it still buys furs from the area trappers.

 H & M GAS BAR  Ph. (306) 888-2265.
This is a locally owned business owned and operated by locals Fred Hems and Ernest McKenzie along with their wives and children.

The gas bar at the Mohawk sells everything from apples to Zantac 75.  The gas bar has been known to sell gas at prices that are competitive and often cheaper than more southern communities.

Employees and customers said “There is not one bad thing about this place.” Hours of business  are 8 am to 10 pm Mon to Sat and Sundays are from 12 - 6.  Cumberland residences appreciate the convenience of evening & weekend shopping at this store.
