The Mystery Of Ann Siang Hill

This page is made possible due to a letter sent to the press
and the hypotheses made to
explain the sender's motives. I leave
it to the reader to make their own judgement.

The Letter That Started It All:

Come night time, there is a constant flow of youths going to Ann Siang hill, be they leaning singly against walls, deep in private reverie; or in groups laughing away. They may be sharing their ideals and ambitions, they may be confiding their sorrows and frustrations, they may be… But one thing's certain, they are all males.

Ann Siang Hill is also known as Da Men Lou, as its name connotes the same quiet and prosperous peacefulness in the streets. It is a maze of back alleyways, sloping grounds, road junctions, a green hill, staircases and steps and elegant lamps. In recent years, the place becomes alive after 9pm; especially on Saturdays, where these youths continue to loiter the streets till the wee hours of the morning.

Nobody will bother with whatever they are doing, because they are a law-abiding bunch, and there have not been reports of fights or quarrels, to disrupt the peace and compromise security. It looks as if they are just a group of 'misplaced' youths. Is this the aimlessness of the youths? Is this the result of their frustrations and sorrows? Or is this the result of daytime work pressures? Occasionally there are also those who dress finely driving Mercedes Benzes, waiting in their cars. What are they waiting for? I don't know.

The intention of my letter is not to ask the relevant authorities to react to the matter at hand, but to ask them to investigate thoroughly this phenomenon. It will be futile to simply drive these youths away, as they will most certainly find a new hangout.

What we need to investigate seriously is the cause of this phenomenon, is this due to the progressiveness of society or the liberated attitude now because of education? Or is this simply an anomaly of a segment in society, for example, how an excessively tight rein will cause unknown fear in a certain proportion of youths?

This matter awaits the eminent sociologists to unrave.

The Hypothesis:

This sounds suspiciously like someone blowing the whistle here. I refuse to believe that this person has no clue of the place being hallowed cruising grounds. I thing he gave himself away already by specifically pointing out that 'they are all males'. There are so many other 'youths' hanging out in so many other parts of Singapore, often up till the wee hours; Bengs in Marina Square, skateboarders at Raffles Place (and yes, they are usually all male too, unless you wanna count in the groupies), Mats at coffeeshops etc.

So why is the writer doing this? What does he gain from directing attention to this place and alerting the authorities? We know how in Singapore, one cry of protest, *especially* if it reflects conservative views, suddenly becomes amplified as a tumultuous uproar from the conservative majority. (Who are hugely silent, and hence tolerant, and hence it would take something requiring urgent action from the top if it seems that they are being provoked, they and their fragile, vote-carrying sensitivities). It's the tyranny of the lone voice. All it took for ushers in cinemas to be more stringent is when some bored attention-seeking self-appointed moral meteorologist writes in to the papers and makes public her indignation at 'underaged youngsters being let in indiscriminately.' This kind of power-play will inevitably be masked by notes of concern (which to me, frankly, sound like bullshitting hypocrisy)--'are we going to sacrifice the moral values of our youths just so that cinema operators can rake in profits?'

Theory 1: This guy knows exactly what's going on, but he does not want any spotlight on his own sexual orientation so he's writing the matter in this oblique style; its cryptic nature also adds to the mystery. It's an open invitation for action.

Theory 2: He's been to ASH before, probably looks like something the dog vomited out after it ate the cat's vomit, been rejected countless times (even by people who look like what the cat vomited out), and all this daunting wall of non-reciprocity suddenly collapses on him and he goes on this vindictive trip. 'To all the men who rolled their eyes when I said 'hello', to the ones who showed me the finger when I scolded them 'so proud!', to the ones who giggled and made gagging noises when they saw me wanking seductively behind huge circuit-boxes, well, I'll make all of you regret it! You'll never walk down ASH with your lickable chests and touch-me-not diamond-shaped calves and if-I-ever-get-to-kiss-them-I'll-suck-your-whole-face-in lips! May sirens and beacons rape all your private shrines and may you all flee in athletic I-wish-I-could-see-those-buns-flex-in-slo-mo strides!'

Somehow or the other I prefer theory number 2. The fact that he's written in to the papers is so tragic and melodramatic it's the proper response of the snubbed queen. Theory number 1 suggests such an extreme kind of boliao-ness which I don't wish to attribute to our 'morally-conservative (straight) majority'. I'll give them more credit than that.

Misplaced Youths? Misplaced Concern more like it.

Other Responses:

I would also like to suggest that it's because he/she had nothing else better to do. And I'm dead serious about this. I'm not sure if this is a local phenomenom, but I find that there is a particular group who will go out of their way to make a point for heaven knows what personal reasons.

Example 1: During JC, the principle read out a letter of complaint by an outsider who reported that a couple in school uniform was found sharing dessert at the nearby hawker centre. The students were not playing truant, or caught smoking, but the act of sharing dessert from the same bowl apparently was enough to spur someone on to notify the school. I swear I'm not making this up.

Example 2: You know those appeals for donations from the Salvation Army? There are a few cases (note: not one, but a _few_) where people have _mailed_ back donation forms with 1 cent & 5 cent coins attached using scotch tape, and one with newspapers _carefully_ folded up, and another with ghost notes in the envelope.

Perhaps for such people excitement comes in small packages.

But I think the guy/gal/woman/prankster might be doing this to blow the whistle on the cruising scene. I just wonder whether anyone thinks that authorities will act on the call.

I'd put my money on #2 too. And throw in a couple of bucks that that old queen is one of the journalists in SPH who has probably been the inhouse Deep Throat of cruising in Spore. Pun intended. I dont think its a secret anymore that there are some real hypocrites in the press who seel out their own, most likely due to Theory # 2. Yeah. misplaced youth my ass.

Yup, I subscribe to your second theory about this Chinese paper forum writer... A revenge for not getting what he came for (or was it he didn't cum for what he haven't got?...hahah
