Facts And Fiction About Homosexuality

In my interactions with friends and through forums in the net, I came to the conclusion that there are still a lot of myths and misleading information about homosexuality. I do understand that attitudes towards homosexuality are very much individualistic. If Tommy is raised in a homophobic environment, and his perception of homosexuals is bad, then his attitude towards homosexuality will not be a good one. On the other hand, if Mary has a good perception of homosexuals and has friends and relatives who are homosexuals, then her attitude towards homosexuality will generally be a good one.

In my opinion, many people are still having very misleading ideas about homosexuality. Thus here's my say regarding the fact and fiction of homosexuality.

Note: Due to the complex nature of the terms used to described a gay man or a gay woman, I have thus labelled the entire group as homosexuals, gay men as gays and gay women as lesbians.

Myth 1~ Only effeminate men are gays and masculine-behaving women are lesbians.

My say: Human being are very good at classifying and stereotyping. Macho men can be gay and non-masculine behaving females can be lesbians. Some might ask, if that's the case, how do we differentiate through appearances? The answer is, we can't. Didn't we learn in school that we shouldn't judge a person by their appearance?

Myth 2~ Homosexuals (especially the males) love sex. All they want to do is to quench their sexual desire. If they can't find a partner, they would resort to molesting, raping, cruising……

My say: Well, who doesn't have a thirst to quench? Prostitution (a.k.a the exploitation of women for sex) wouldn't be one of the world's oldest profession if it wasn't for the enormous thirsts for sex of the heterosexuals. Molesters and rapists are not solely homosexuals.

Myth 3~ Gays are interested in all men and lesbians in all women.

My say: Human beings make choices, and so do homosexuals.

Myth 4~ Homosexuals find their mates through cruising and their relationship doesn't last long.

My say: Again human beings make choices and there are homosexuals out there who don't cruise. It is true that there is a proportion of homosexuals who quench their sexual desire through cruising for a sex partner but there are also people out there who find their mate through communication and deeper understanding. As for the duration of a relationship, it is not up to the sexual orientation of the couple to decide but rather the strength of the bond that was fostered during the relationship.

Myth 5~ Homosexuals are only found in nightspots and cruising areas.

My say: Do look around. The next person to stand beside you on the street might turn out to be a gay or a lesbian.

Myth 6~ Homosexuals are more creative than heterosexuals.

My say: Absolute nonsense. Both are creative and non-creative in their own ways. How do you define levels of creativity?

Myth 7~ Homosexuality is a deviant act and thus should be eliminated.

My say:Who or what defines the constituents of a deviant act? The government, social norms, culture, religion …… the list goes on and on. The important thing for homosexuals to note is: Do you feel that being a homosexual is deviant? If your answer is no, good for you. If your answer is yes, then you are ascribing yourself to the norms of the people who feel that homosexuality is deviant.

Myth 8~ Homosexuals are very weird people.

My say: Again, it is up to individuals to judge what is weird and what is not. Is the lady in the bus-stop with 3 kittens in her pocket weird? Is the dog with the purple fur weird? Weirdness doesn't imply homosexuality. Neither does homosexuality imply weirdness.

Note: The graphics on this page are not related to anything that I have said. However, my aim is to show the love between two person is a beautiful thing, no matter what sex they are. Very often, homosexuals are depleted of the opportunity to show their love legitimately in public. This couldbe due to the fact that conservatives are still denying the fact that love between two person is possible, and can be beautiful.
