Colours and Standards

The Royal Army Standard of Estalia

This is the battle standard for the Royal Army.

It is much simpler than the standard which is used on ceremonial occassions which includes all the various coats of arms of the nation.

This flag is carried by the king's champion and has magical properties as described in the magic items list.

The Army Standard of the Sacred Office

This is the Army flag of the Sacred Office of the Inquisition.

It portrays the seal of virtue which the Inquisition bestows on all its written judgements and the arms of Tomas the Pure.

This flag can only be carried by a hero of the Brethren and only in an army led by an Inquisitor General. It has strong anti magic properties.

Unit Colours and Uniform Styles

Not surprisingly you are not going to find Estalian figures in your nearest Games Workshop outlet! Figures from the Empire and Brettonian ranges will be quite adequate. If you can find them, Parliamentarian Infantry from the English Civil War, Spanish Conquistadors or Swedish 30 year war figures would be good for the Inquisition troops in particular.

The armies of Estalia are characterised by strong variations in colour schemes. The royal troops feature red and yellow strongly in their uniforms. They also favour red or black spear and pike shafts and black equipment such as belts. For contrast they often feature various blues in their uniforms. Caballeros and Peons tend to wear normal clothes made of leather, homespun wool and linen. Therefore browns, cream and grey feature strongly. They often wear a bright unit colour in their hats or paint their weapons a strong colour such as red, green or blue. Artillery crews tend to wear workmanlike leather and brown and black materials.

The Inquisition feature 2 main colours in their uniforms white and light grey. The uniforms of the Brethren and Infanta's Guard are basically white, lances are black, bows white, shields are white with black heraldic beasts. Inquisitors wear white robes edged in purple or blood red. Other troops wear uniforms of light grey with small amounts of colour as highlights in red, yellow and white.

Special units have their own colours:

Swordsmen of Cordoba: These troops wear white shirts and red trousers. Sometimes these are slashed in empire style in which case the shirt is slashed with red and the trousers with yellow.
Arquebusiers of Cordoba: This unit wears uniforms of royal blue with white trimmings. They wear feathers of red over yellow in their hats.
Bilboan Marines: Wear uniforms of pale blue or blue grey. White is the traditional colour of belts etc. Somewhere in their uniform they always show the national colours of red and yellow.
Black Watchmen of Grenada: No surprise, the uniform is black with small amounts of red. In full dress they wear a white feather with a red tip.
Forest Brethren: Forest Brethren wear colours that make them invisible in their forest home. These are maily greens, browns and pale yellows. In battle they often feature white sashes or feathers as a mark of affection for the cult of Isolde.
