Recent Developments

An international airport has been built and fully operation in Apas Balung, Tawau, located about 40km from the town centre. The airport is expected to cater international flights to Kalimantan, Indonesia and more places in the future. The airport will be the 2nd biggest in Sabah. The cost to build the airport is more than RM 250 million.

Tawau Central Market

A central market for Tawau was completed in Dec '98. The central market which can accommodate about 6000 stalls costs RM 17 million to complete. It is located at the town centre and due to be opened by mid 1999. The central market was claimed to be the biggest in Malaysia. It was a major construction for Tawau since the 80's.


 

A shopping mall named Sabindo Plaza had just opened in January 1999. The plaza is the first shopping centre in Tawau. More shops are expected to open by year end. The plaza is strategically located in Bandar Sabindo and has close proximity to the Federal Building and the Sabah State Library.
