1. a basic howto: getting the goods (aka getting down and dirty in a2w)

if you read this entire treatise, you should have whatever you're
looking for (without having to demean yourself by begging or getting
flamed).....
a basic howto for getting the goods:

1.  don't sign up for those "me-too" lists.  all they will get you is
processed luncheon meat (spam).

2.  don't visit any website that announces itself in all caps, uses
lots of curse words in the body of the message, or says it has lots of
xxx things.  you're wasting your time in the t?? (insert your own
numerals) circle jerk.  all you'll see is a lot of javascript popup
windows, and no warez.  clicking on those windows will get you nothing
but more windows.

3.  don't visit ftp's that use a ratio system.  you'll get burned, and
they don't keep track of what you've uploaded to them.  if for any
reason you get knocked offline while at one of these sites, you will
be forced to upload again before you can even think of downloading.

4.  do read the sig files (signatures).  you can learn how things work
by following the links in the sig files (like the links i have below).

5.  do not request binaries, cracks, serial numbers in this group.
there are groups for that.  this is a discussion group.  just check
your usenet server's listings to find the appropriate group.

6.  don't crosspost!  if you think you need that many folks trying to
help you, then you'll be better off posting separate messages in each
group.  plus, it will keep binaries out of this discussion group.

7.  before you request help in finding something, check at least 4 or
5 of the ftps, and do some looking on your own, (including the
alt.binaries.warez.* ng's, if available, and irc if you are familiar
with it).   some of the siteops have different tastes in what they put
on their servers.  if someone says "no games", they aren't kidding.
and requesting help is different than requesting that someone tell you
exactly where to find your jewel. requesting something common is a
good way to get flamed.

8.  do get an ftp client.  learn how to set it up correctly.  it is
your friend.  it will help you get many things you want.  it will
clean your house, feed the dog, and burp the baby (as needed).  if in
doubt, read the faqs.

9. there is plenty of space for you to write your message in the body.
you don't have to write the entire thing in the subject line.   think
of the subject line as a headline  (which it basically is).  it's up
to you to pique interest in your subject without using any of #10's
no-no's.

10. don't post in caps, alternating letters, or use extraneous symbols
in your subject line.  you will be flamed or ignored, or worse, you
will have to endure an eternity of the circle jerk popups.

11.  as this is a discussion group, and a discussion group only,
refrain from posting binaries (aka: attachments) in this group.
please post any binaries you feel you must share in an appropriate
binaries group. then, let us know where you placed it.  if anyone's
interested, they can go and get it there.

12.  usenet is a text-based medium.  please set your news-reader to
post in text only.  do not use html settings, as you will end up with
half of your audience unable to read your postings.  use the pretty
fonts, colours, and backgrounds on a web-page, not on usenet.

2. finding a usenet provider

if your isp usenet provider doesn't carry the binary groups, or is
dropping ngs because of content, or has multilple problems with
retention, speed and completeness, you do have a choice.

pay services

http://www.altopia.net
http://www.usenet-access.com
http://www.usenetserver.com/
http://www.newsguy.com/

if you're terminally broke, then you'll have to try some of the open
servers... (these sites have lists of open servers)

http://www.arcwebserv.com/jumpsite/usenet.html
http://www.serverseekers.com/

realize that i am in *no* way affiliated with any of these sites.  i
have nothing to do with their content, their coding, their pop-ups,
etc.   any complaints can be directed at the webmasters at said sites.

4. game binary groups

usenet journeys.....

news:alt.binaries.games  for 0-day to 7-day old original group
releases & support

news:alt.binaries.games.reposts  for the repost of up to one month old
releases, and filling of requests

news:alt.binaries.warez.win95-games  for the repost of games from 1
month to 1-yr old

news:alt.binaries.warez.ibm-pc.games  for the repost of 1-year old
back to 1995 games

smaller games and apps.

news:alt.binaries.games.adult  soft-porn & nudity related adult-themed
games

news:alt.binaries.ibm-pc.games  a lot of cd images, looks like
anything goes here. For you people who like to make homemade rips of
cd's, or repack group releases for some strange reason and repost
them, this would be the place, but you should warn people even here
what it is that they will be getting.

news:alt.binaries.old.games   mostly cd images and older rips

news:alt.binaries.games.kidstuff    as the name implies. Not Mortyr or
Kingpin

news:alt.binaries.warez.games   great for people on slower
connections.

news:alt.binaries.test   If learning to post, or just want to practice
with new software, please, please, do it here!
