SHINNECOCK INDIANS


SHINNECOCK, North American Indian tribe of the Algonquian language family and of the Eastern Woodlands culture area. They were native to Long Island, N.Y. After 1788 many Shinnecock formed the Brotherton band with neighboring Algonquin tribes and settled in present-day Oneida Co., N.Y. In 1833 they moved to Wisconsin, where they were absorbed into the local population. A small number of Shinnecock remained on Long Island. In the 1990 census, 1522 people in the U.S. claimed to be of Shinnecock descent.

Today's Shinnecock are recognized by the state of New York, and have an active, vital Native community of about 450 members residing on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation with about 800 acres of land in Southampton, Long Island, New York. Many more Shinnecock live in surrounding areas.
