(During the C. W. one could hire a substitute if he was drafted. This could pay $I00-$500,or more! Along with this money there were bounties paid by the federal, state and local goverments to join the army. Thus all in all a young man could walk away,if he survived, with enough money to buy a small farm!!To relate,during the Civil War a army private was paid $13.00 a month, at the begining of the war, it was raised to $15.00 later.)
