Surrey RCMP were pelted with beer bottles during a Canada Day disturbance in Cloverdale.

"A small riot ensued which took 30 police officers 90 minutes to quell," Const. Tim Shields said yesterday.

The mini-riot erupted after police moved in to break up a fight among a group of young people at a skateboard park adjacent to the Cloverdale Millennium Amphitheatre where Canada Day celebrations attracted about 50,000 people.

One officer was hit in the face with a bottle but not seriously hurt, Shields said. Police are recommending charges of inciting a riot and causing a disturbance against one youth and a charge of obstruction against an adult.
