February 25, Nanaimo (British Columbia, Canada) - 100 hospital workers, mostly housekeeping staff, walked off the job in a wildcat strike over recent layoffs as workers in Victoria ended their two-day wildcat strike.
February 24, Victoria (British Columbia, Canada) - About 50 housekeeping and food service employees walked off the job at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in a wildcat strike and picketed the entrance to the building. The Vancouver Island Health Authority had just layed-off 1,400 workers who are members of the Hospital Employees Union. About 24 police showed up and tried to interfere with the picket, but with the support of anarchists and members of the Communities Solidarity Coalition, the workers stood strong. There were no arrests. The workers then occupied the cafeteria at the hospital. The Health Authority is trying to get the Labour Relations Board to rule the action "illegal".
