Neskonlith Band Member Arrested
(Feb. 26. Traditonal Secwempec Territory)
The arrest of Amanda Soper on Sunday, February 23, is another stage in the three-year-long battle to protect Neskonlith lands and traditional Secwempec territory from destruction by Sun Peaks Ski Resort expansion.
Amanda Soper, age 26, was originally charged along with other band members in 2001 with “trespass” and “mischief” for being part of a campsite on traditional Secwepemc territory. Her arrest last Sunday is another instance where the Canadian and British Columbian governments have been trying to criminalize the presence of Native Peoples on their own lands.
Amanda Soper will be in court today to hear the charges, but her morale is said to be good. She has been struggling for the right of her people to live on the lands given them by the Creator and she has indicated she will continue that fight.
