TEN MINUTES WITH COACH KEVIN CRANDALL AUGUST 28, 2007 |
Ten Minute Interview with Head Coach Kevin Crandall
8-30-07 Coach Crandall you are entering your 14th seqson as the hubs head Coach, during thoose 14 years have you seeen much change in the players who come through your program? I don’t think the kids have changes much at all, I just think parents now are more likely to look for any place to put the blame for their childs mius-behavior some where else, there is always a reason why their child didn’t do, couldn’t do it or wouldn’t do it. And I think 20 years ago the impetis was more on the child. How about Coaching, has it changed more over the past 14 years? I am a lot smarter about things, now I don’t try to fight every little battle, I worry much less about the kids that don’t want to do the nessecary things, and spend a lot more time worrying about the kids that do. With your win over Chicago Corliss you recorded you 100th win as the Hubs Head Coach and also your 141st career win, that’s and average of 7 wins every season for the past 13 season. Now I know this is a great personal accomplishment as well as a great accomplishment for your program, What do you contribute you and your programs success if you had to pick one thing? Hard Work, A lot of hard work by the staff & the assistant coaches and an exorbinent amount of work by the players, there is much more dedication here than at 99% of the high schools in the state. And that is a year round commitment, not just during the football season commitment? Yes, our kids care a great deal about it in February about getting stronger and faster and in March and April and I think that makes all the difference. Now with building a successful program, I don’t think a lot of people realize the amount of hours that goes into a season, do you know how amay hours your staff puts in during a years time? I would have no idea, those guys around most of the summer, and if they are not coaching a sport in the off season, then they are are responsible for after school weight room suprevision, and then obviously during the season they are here until 7-7:30 every night. Then late on Friday nights and them most of the day on Saturday, and Chris and I meet with a couple of the other assistants on Sunday, so for some of us it is seven days a week. This year in addition to a new stadium, and the second year in a new conference, you also have some new additions to your coaching staff, I know Coach Mahoney took an assistant Supperitendents postion in Oregon, can you tell us about your new coaches? Well we have Richard Harvey, who had been the head wrestling coach and the assistant football coach for quite a while in DeKalb, so he was not only familiar with our program and having been good friends with Tom for a long time, he had good idea of how things ran here. And then we were able to bring back Nick Reineck and Kyle Kissack, and the have been through the program and they are familiar with the program, so if we need drills that need to be done, we don’t have to explain it to them. And we alos have jason Harper that is going to come out and help a little bit, he’s goiiong back to get his masters, so we have another guy to help out with the defensive backs. So that has worked out really well. Now to the Chicago Corlis game, I know you had a big win at 44-8 and made a big statement, and Corliss didn’t score on you until we had some sophomore kids in there. What did you learn from game? We just made a lot of key blocking mistakes, I thought we had a couple of lulls there where where we didn’t play very well, but overall it was a good preformance, and overall we played pretty hard, we coame off the ball well offensively, some bright spots with Rosie. Alex looked good running the option., Boone I thought played well, and Dan Ruppenthal, if we can get him to get his pads down a little bit I think he is going to be a good running back. But overall I think it was pretty good, But the hard part was defensivley we didn’t get much of a look because they were such a hodge podge offensvie team. Now looking ahead to you last non-conference game against Dixon. More of this interview to come later…….. |
