Yom Kippur Ideas

One of the fundamental ideas of Yom Kippur is asking G-d for forgiveness of our sins. This is in contrast to Rosh Hashanah, which is dedicated to accepting G-d as our master.  The word used to express our actions to get forgiveness from G-d is “Tshuva” which means, “return” not “Charata” which means “regret”.  Rav Tzvi Kook in Parsha Netzavim Perek 30 points out that, in Posuk 2 it is written that the Jews will do tshuva until G-d.  Posuk 3 it states that the Jews will come to Israel.  And in Posuk 8 it states Jews will do tshuva and mitzvot.  Therefore, he asks why does it speak twice about Jews doing tshuva and he answers the first time is to teach us the Jews want to come close to G-d by coming to G-ds beloved garden (Israel) and the second time to do mitzvot.

The above is however just one incident from one parsha.  A more fundamental part of the Yom Kippur service was the taking of two identical twin goats that were identical in every way including being born from the same parents.  One was brought as a sacrifice to G-d and the other who appeared to be the identical twin in every way was taken to the desert and thrown off a cliff to die.  This is one of the biggest lessons and mysteries of Zionism.  How can persons who appear so righteous, and so knowledgeable of Torah, not realize that every one of their prayers and holidays revolve solely on the need of the Jews to come to G-ds beloved garden.  At the same time, persons that appear totally devoid of interest in the Torah, have a burning desire to come to G-ds beloved garden and love it so much they want to fight for it in Tzahal.

Psychiatrists have many clinical definitions of being insane.  The Torah also has its own definitions. The gemorah writes that one who enters into a mikveh holding a sheretz is insane.  Paraphrasing this into secular English one can say this is like stamping ham with a kosher label.  How can one fast 25 hours on Yom Kippur or Tisha Baav and as the fast ends say, “Next year in Jerusalem” with no intention to do anything about fulfilling ones word?  This is the meaning of lying.  To say something that one knows is not true.  Lying however is also a sin.  Perhaps that is the reason that all Yom Kippur we say “Baruch Shem” with a loud voice because we are like angels and are being forgiven of all our sins.  However, between the end of the fast and saying the Shema we have said that lie about coming to the capitol of G-ds beloved garden.  Previous generations were able to justify their conduct since it was not realistic.  In the world of today however all one has to do is board a 747 with ones free ticket.  (The Jewish agency will not only give a free ticket to any new immigrant but new immigrants get major financial help in moving to G-ds beloved garden).

Another clinical definition of insanity according to the gemorah is going into graveyards during the night.  After 3500 years, the Jews have to realize that the Jews are hated by ALL the nations.  Just because the stories of Germany and Spain and Rome happened many years ago does not change the fact that people do not change.  The psychiatrists call anyone that wants to suffer a “masochist”. Any Torah Jew that pays attention to his religion will see how the rabbis called someone outside G-ds beloved garden not part of the Jewish nation.
