Smooth bore illegal home made firearms chambered for pistol, revolver and rifled cartridges are very often encountered in criminal cases in India and other developing countries. The possibility of identifying probable type of smooth bore firearm from fired bullet has been investigated. Examination of barrel marks on bullets fired from various bullet-bore combinations of a variety of illegal smooth bore firearms revealed a wide variation in the nature of marks, such as deep scoring around the periphery, super imposed striations, groove like engravings, inclined striae, scratches in patches etc. The study of nature of marks coupled with plausible consideration of movement of bullet inside smooth bore barrels of varying dimensions has resulted into new classification criteria thereby enabling formulation of new parameters to evaluate type of firearm from fired bullet when the suspect smooth bore firearm is not available.
