Using WS_FTP
Note: You
cannot
use your FTP program to move files
to your Geocities
account any
longer unless you are a Pro member. Kinda sucks really! No
"real" customer support at Yahoo, it is much cheaper to just buy
150 or so megs of webspace at a righteous web domain hosting place, like I
have. But still, if you must have Geocities here is the scoop:

It has recently been brought to my attention that many
Homesteaders do NOT know
"how" to use WS_FTP properly! This page will show you
just what you should see when you use the WS_FTP when using it
properly!
So you ask, just what is FTP? FTP stands for File Transfer
Protocol. FTP client software allows you to transfer files
between your hard drive and a remote server. For instance, you
can put your personal home page up on the Web by transferring files
from your hard drive to a Web server, or you can download programs
from your favorite shareware site — fast.

I myself use the WS_FTPLE, which is a limited edition and it is
free if you are:
a U.S. federal, state, or local government employee
a student, faculty member, or staff member of an educational
institution, or
a non-commercial home user. (recreational use only)
For those of you who do not have WS_FTP it may be downloaded for
free here
Now let's look at some screen shots I took of my WS_FTP screen:
Session Properties
This is what your WS_FTP screen should look like when you are
connecting to Geocities:

Make sure that you have "your" username entered correctly
and your Geocities password! Also the Host Type is Unix
(standard).
Transferring Your Images
I always transfer my gif, jpg, and midi files first. Why you
may ask? Because, then I can insert the "exact" URL of
the file into my HTML editor I am using (Home Site©) and can view my
webpage as it will appear when uploaded!
OK . . .this is what your screen should look like after you have
connected to Geocities and you are ready to transfer a gif, jpg, or
midi file. Be sure to set the button at Binary! Click on the
image or midi you want to transfer (this highlights it in blue) and
then click on the arrow pointing right (towards your file manager at
Geocities).

Now you should be ready to transfer your HTML file for the page you
have made. Remember to save the file as .html if you are not
using an HTML editor (those of you who use notepad). These are
the settings to use when transferring your HTML pages (your webpage
itself. Again, be sure to click on the HTML or HTM file you want
to transfer and then click on the right arrow pointing towards your
Geocities File Manager!

Be SURE to set the button to ASCII before
you transfer the file, or when you attempt to access your file you
will get a screen pop-up saying "Document contains no data"!

For Netscape Composer Users
Below is what you should see when you use Netscape Composer and you
are ready to "Publish" your webpage. The images and
your text will all be uploaded to your file automatically. Use
your own user name and password, of course!
