Why has GeoCities transitioned my GeoMail to Yahoo!? (sucks, huh?)

NOTE: You must now have Yahoo! Mail Plus in order to receive your geocities/Yahoo email in your own POP3 email program! Get Extra Storage, POP Access and Forwarding, bigger attachments and many more features starting at only $29.99/year.

(sorry, but those perks are from Yahoo's ad)

Before the integration with Yahoo!, GeoCities offered a stand-alone, optional e-mail service called GeoMail. Those who signed up were given an address such as "membername@oocities.com." Mail sent to this address was either saved in a private POP mailbox or forwarded to another e-mail address.

As part of the integration with Yahoo!, Geocities is transitioning all existing GeoMail accounts to Yahoo! Mail. What does this mean if you have a GeoMail account? In a nutshell (and it sucks too!):

  • Your "membername@oocities.com" address will continue to work, even if you change your member name when you re-register. For example, if your GeoCities member name was "joe" and during the re-registration process you picked "joe.geo" as your Yahoo! ID, your "joe@oocities.com" e-mail address will still work!
  • You'll still be able to choose between POP and forwarding.
  • Now you'll also have the option of reading your mail directly from a Web browser. This is super convenient if you are at a friend's house, traveling, or at work!
  • You'll manage your e-mail preferences differently. Instead of going to the GeoCities profile editor, head to Yahoo! Mail and click on "Options."

What will happen to my GeoCities e-mail address if my member name changes during the re-registration process?

Your "membername@oocities.com" e-mail address will not change, even if your member name does!

I currently use GeoCities Mail Forwarding service. How will the transition affect me?

If you currently use your GeoCities e-mail account to forward your mail elsewhere, you can continue to do so! If you want to continue using Mail Forwarding after the transition, you'll need to allow Yahoo! to send you special offers and announcements from time to time. If you choose not to receive these mailings, you'll be able to get your "membername@oocities.com" mail through Yahoo! Mail's Web mail interface.

How do I setup Netscape Navigator for GeoCities mail?

If you use Netscape Navigator to browse the net and do not have any other mail address configured in there you have to make the following changes. (If you already have it configured for some other email, you have other options) You can get to the mail settings through Options --> Mail and News Preferences and add in the following details: Servers Tab SMTP : mail.oocities.com POP : mail.oocities.com POP User Name : membername Messages removed from server Identity Tab Your Name : Your Name Your email : membername@oocities.com Reply-to-Address : membername@oocities.com Organization Tab Remember Password You have to click on the small envelope on the bottom right of the Netscape window to check your mail. It will ask you for your password the very first time.

If you use Netscape Communicator 4.0+ you can format your mail for many different accounts!

Here are the most important steps:

You start by going to Start>Programs>Netscape Communicator>Utilities>User Profile Manager.

After you setup your mail account you will see this step:

Yahoo! Geocities Email Setup for Communicator

And then be sure to fill in your options here:

Yahoo! Geocities Email Setup for Communicator 2

The rest of the little pages fill in on their own, so don't worry about them!

How do I setup Eudora for GeoCities mail?

These are the bare minimum settings you need to get started with. You can later customize to your needs.   This is only for if you became a GeoCities member before June 25, 1999. Just follow the screenshots for directions.   Look below for the setup with the membername@yahoo.com email address.

Note: Sorry, but I do not use Eudora any longer (over 5 years now) but I do believe the settings are still the same.

How do I setup Hotmail to check for my GeoCities mail?

Log into your Hotmail account and then click on the on Control Panel and then on Pop Server Settings. Pop Server Name: pop.mail.yahoo.com;  POP User Name: membername; POP User Password: Your password.  Do not opt for Leaving Mail on Server Set Timeout to 180 seconds Submit Settings To check your mail, click on Check Pop Mail. (Please note it takes some time for Hotmail to get your GeoCities mail so in case you have problems, increase the Timeout time.

Hotmail accounts now can be installed in the new Outlook Express 5.0, but please remember, this is still in Beta and there are many problems which occur at times (and, boy do I know it now, lol)! This is NOT the same as geocities Mail!
