Snook, a member of the pike family, inhabit the cool, southern waters around southern Australia, favoring shallow waters up to 60' with sand to weed bottoms. It's basically an inshore species and can grow over 4' long.and weigh up to 13 pounds. However, those snook caught in Australian waters average around 2.5 pounds or less. Often regarded as a savage predator, the snook is extremely fast over short distances and uses an ambush type hunting style. It conceals itself in the weed beds interecepting prey in this manner. Snook are most often caught by trolling using strips of squid or pilchard as bait or by using several ganged hooks unweighted. Snook bite is best during the first two hours after sunrise, then gradually tapers off during the day. They can also be caught at night under jetty lights. |
