WEB PAGE DESIGN

WITH NETSCAPE COMMUNICATOR

GRAPHIC ARTS LESSON for 8 & 9 November 1999

You have two days to complete this lesson.  However, once you know how to do it you could do it in 10 minutes.  This means that doing it only one time is not wise.  You cannot explore the internet either of these two days.  If you feel absolutely confident that you could do this project correctly within a ten minute time limit you are then to explore the other Icons on Netscape Communicator.

Number 1: You are to click on the Icon in the lower left corner of the Netscape screen.  This opens up the Composer.  The Composer is the program that lets you make your web page.

commls1.jpg (16812 bytes) Netscape Composer allows you to type in what you want on your web page and it then converts it to an HTML file.  HTML means Hyper Text Markup Language.   The purpose of HTML is that nearly all computers are able to understand it.   Because of this you can send it to a computer in Russia or Brazil and they can send the same thing to you.  In essence it works over phone lines.

Number 2:

After the Composer opens you are to click on the left window and change the "Normal" to "Heading 1".  This will give you large fonts for your Heading. commls2.jpg (15623 bytes)
commls3.jpg (28437 bytes) Number 3:

Anything you type in this area will appear on your web page.   This is also the place you put pictures (images).

Number 4:

commls4.jpg (29837 bytes) You click on view and then page source to see your HTML code.   To debug this becomes a critical ability.  Without knowing a little about how your page is put together you can not solve problems.

Number 5:

commls5.jpg (25563 bytes) Remember you must go to your user space on the "L" drive to save your HTML.

Save it as "yourname".

Notice that it is already going to have a .htm or .html extension.
