GRAPHIC ARTS PHOTO PROGRAMS

LESSON #1

November 1999

The image on the left is the final version that is on the internet. The image in the middle is the original scanned version. Notice that there is a black metal bar merging from her head and that the image is darker than normal.

The image on the right is an enlarged version to show and to work on the dark spot on the left side of her nose. The dark spot was a flaw on the photograph and not on the person themselves. I tried to scrape it away with a knife but could not.

To fix the image I first cropped it as closely as possible to eliminate the merger clutter around the borders

I then went to the mid tone highlight shadow options to lighten it. It did not do it properly for me so I then went to the brightness/contrast and lightened it.

I then masked with the lasso tool the area at the top of her head and used the paint bucket to eliminate it.

I then then magnified the nose area and used the clone tool (called a rubber stamp tool on some programs) and eliminated the spot on her nose.

I then saved the image as a (about 33% quality) .jpg and put it on the internet.

Other things I did was to resize (resample on some programs) the image after the scan so it was the least I could accept on my web page.

Students job is to take a non-professional photograph, (you will be given a photograph that is assigned to your specific computer station - you cannot trade with another computer station) scan it, and make it look better than the original.  You are then to put the original image and the reworked image on the screen at the same time and use the Print Screen option to put them together as a single image.  You are to use the Text/Font option to put your name on the original image.   You are to then print them on the laser printer and I will collect them for a grade.

You will be graded/evaluated on project completion and how well and clean you improve the image.

You have four class periods to do this.
