My Cab Driving Days
I was a cab driver for over 4 years here in Columbus, OH from 1995 -1999. I have many fond memories of this lifestyle as a full time cab driver. I did say lifestyle, meaning that is was more than a job! Out of my tenure as a cab driver, over 3 years were spent with Yellow Cab as an Overcab driver. Overcab driving is where you lease a cab either daily or weekly, and you take the cab home overnight. Hence the term over cab for overnight lease. Back when I drove this type of lease it was fairly expensive, about $100 daily for six days or about $430 for 5 days and you kept the cab over the weekend. Mind you these rate are now very old. I am sure they are a bit higher now. I have a good knowledge of Columbus and surrounding area. I was never robbed, Thank God. I had an occasional run out. I ran quite a few non cash trips. I hardly ever worked the streets at night. Airport trips did prove to be interesting. My longest trip went to Steubenville, OH. That was a $225 trip with a $25 tip! That was a good day! I made $450 that day, a once in a lifetime event. I usually averaged $50-$100 a day take home income, considering I usually drove 12-15 hrs a day. Well that is my story. On Wednesday January 9, 2008 I go take my taxicab divers test here in Columbus Ohio. I should pass with ease. I will be driving cab with Yellow Cab again. I can't wait to be a cab driver again! I'll keep you posted, and maybe take some pictures! I passed and got an 98% my Taxicab Drivers License. Yeah!!! I start driving fulltime on January 14, 2008. |
