Toastmasters International... Sweet's Pride of Fairbanks
Toastmasters is an organization which helps people develop critical communication and management skills. We teach methods of group evaluation and critique, leadership skills and parliamentary process in conducting meetings. There are four chartered clubs in the Fairbanks area, and a fifth one is being formed in North Pole. I am the President of the Sweet's Pride Toastmasters, which meets weekly at the Fairbanks Resource Agency building (near 2 Dice Pawn and across the street from Mary Siah and Lathrop High School.) For information on the other clubs in the area, and in the State of Alaska and the Yukon Territory in Canada, visit toastmasters.org or the Yukon Alaska Council of Toastmasters pages. Education is something that we shouldn't ever walk away from, even long after we graduate from schools and colleges. Toastmasters can be a very valuable resource for that!

Brief Biographical Information
I was born in Alameda County, California, and I grew up in the town of Loomis, a small hamlet (at the time) in Placer County, among the Sierra Nevada Mountains northeast of Sacramento. I Graduated from Del Oro High School , where I was on the varsity Cross Country and Track and Field Teams and was awarded the Bank of America Award for achievements in Labaratory Sciences. I was active in scouting and 4-H when I was a youth. I was especially active with equestrian activities, as horses (namely Arabians) had been and always will be a major part of my life. In the 1980's, I Completed the 100 mile long Western States Trail Race, a competition in which a rider and horse must complete the course across rugged terrain from Squaw Valley to Auburn California in less than 24 hours. I also competed in numerous other 50-mile equestrian "endurance races." I am well educated, as I have literally hundreds of college credits. I attended college at California State University, Sacramento, and Sierra Community College in Rocklin California as well as Northern Illinois University where I hold an associate's degree in electronics, and the University of Alabama Distance Education Program, where I attained a two year degree in Theology. I also attended some law classes at Marquette University in Milwaukee Wisconsin. I was in the Navy during the Gulf War of 1991, and during my tour, I went through training at Service School Command, Orlando Florida and Naval Training Center Great Lakes , near Chicago, where I attended the Naval Electronics Technician Schools and was advanced to the ranks of Petty Officer. Although I have studied in a broad range of fields, my true love will always be Natural History and Geology. Upon an honorable discharge from the Navy, I decided to settle in Trevor, a small farming community of approximately 300 residents in southern Wisconsin, where I worked part time as a Freelance journalist for papers in the Kenosha, Racine and Milwaukee area. I Moved from Wisconsin to North Pole Alaska in 1999. Over the years I have had a few successful business ventures. I owned a landscaping business in California, an owner-operator trucking operation headquartered out of Missouri, and am currently developing Blue Aurora Arts and Marketing, an upstart company which I hope to make into a valuable tool for local artists and writers to market their effort. My family in California operated a farm which raised high quality Arabian show horses, and I was instrumental in handling and marketing them. I also worked as the assistant manager to two Radio Shack stores in Waukegan Illinois for a couple years after my tours in the Navy. I am an avid outdoor enthusiast! I enjoy climbing, hiking, hunting, fishing, dog mushing (which I totally suck at) and any sport which involves being on the back of a horse (which I will boast that I'm really good at!) I've successfully summited Mount Ritter(13,065 feet), Mount Shasta (14,128 feet) and Mount Whitney (14,495 feet) in California, as well as numerous peaks in Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska, many of those being over ten thousand. I survived here in the Alaskan interior for several winters without benefit of electricity and conventional heat. I have also spent considerable time deep sea fishing off the coasts of Baja and the Gulf Coast near Galveston Texas. I am also an accomplished painter, sketch artist, photographer, writer and poet. Periodically, I sell my work, and some of my efforts have won contests and have found their way into small publications. One can tell a lot about those he or she idolizes. My list is long, varied, and it spans broad reaches of history. My heroes include the Greek statesman Demosthanes, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington Carver, Henry Ford, Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir, Henry David Thoreau, Winston Churchill, Walter Cronkite, former President Ronald Reagan, former California Governor George Deukmejian, actors Morgan Freeman, Alan Alda and Hal Holbrook, architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor Jim Whittaker, restaraunteer Jay Ramrez, my college Geology professor Richard P. Hilton, my high school Chemistry teacher Arthur Allison PhD., my high school Cross Country Coach Steven W. Williams (1952-1984), authors Jon Krakauer and John Grisham, Cabinet Secratery (and former Wisconsin Governor) Tommy Thompson, former Alaskan governor Jay Hammond, former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman, Secratery Colin Powell, Senator Ted Stevens, Dwight D. Eisenhower, former Phillipine President Corazon Acquino, Arabian Horse show legend Murrel Lacey, Distinguished Toastmaster Donald Erickson, and of course, the biblical legends of Moses, Jonah, David, and Jesus Christ. Last year, I ran against Terry Aldrige and Torie Foote for Seat F. Needless to say, I lost (no hard feelings, though.) I did succeed in getting over ten percent of the vote and I managed to get the ITA endorsement for that election. In spite of losing, I am proud of my effort and accomplishment, and I hope to build on it this year witha victory! Help me make that come true! Vote on October 5, 2004!!! Help me write another chapter to this story of accomplishments! |
